The only city in Indonesia that is still ruled by a Royal Family, Yogyakarta is of extraordinary historical and cultural importance. Borobudur, perhaps the most famous tourist attraction in all of Indonesia, is just a one-hour drive from the city. Built during the 7th-century, this is a monumental landmark and the largest Buddhist temple in the world. Just outside the city limits to the east lies the impressive Prambanan, an 8th-century Hindu temple. Yogyakarta is the center of Javanese fine art and culture, while the famous Batik is characterized by dark blue color and special Royal Family patterns.
